Ganley Foundation Mission

Dear Friend,

Thank you for supporting the Ganley Foundation. Our nonprofit organization was created in memory of my son, Jimmy, who died by suicide due to undiagnosed depression. Our mission is to educate communities about depression and challenge the stigmas that prevent proper intervention and treatment. The Crusade for Awareness was created to promote mental health by educating youth and their parents about the signs of depression. Depression is the number one cause of suicide. Suicide remains the third-leading cause of death for all youth ages 10-24 and the second-leading cause of death for college students. It is also preventable. Early detection, intervention, and treatment save lives.

Facts about Youth Depression and Suicide:
  • More youth are experiencing depression and at younger ages than ever.
  • The rate of suicide among adolescents has quadrupled since the 1950s.
  • Males die by suicide about four times more frequently than do females. However, three times more females than males report attempting suicide.
  • Roughly 20% of youth may experience a depressive episode by the age of 18.
  • Depression in youth is associated with poor social functioning, decreased school performance, and increased risk for drug, alcohol, and nicotine use.
  • In the United States, 8% of high school students attempt suicide each year.
  • Approximately 20% of students in grades 9-12 have seriously considered suicide within the past twelve months.
  • Less than 1 in 5 youths in need of mental health services receive needed treatment.
  • Every day, approximately 91 people in the United States die by suicide.

We invite you to join us during this exciting time as we expand our Crusade for Awareness. Your support is much appreciated. For additional information, please visit our website at ganleyfoundation.org or contact Grace Carricarte at grace@ganleyfoundation.org.
